Therapeutic Farming Programs for Veterans
Roots to Rx: Dirt Therapy
Veterans of the Eastern Shore of Maryland are invited to participate in therapeutic horticulture programming sponsored by the #WeAreOne Alliance at Apotheosis Farm beginning in the Spring planting season 2024.
Research supports nature as an effective therapeutic tool. Operation: THRIVING ACRES will create experiences that utilize plants, gardening, farming, and nature to empower individuals and groups of veterans whose lives have been affected by service-connected illness, injuries, disabilities, and post-traumatic stress disorder to achieve improvements in their cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Veterans have spoken eloquently to us about their need for more opportunities to experience sacred grounding — putting their hands in the dirt and reaping the therapeutic benefits of nurturing something that brings forth life.
In addition to the therapeutic benefits, participants in this program will learn skills in herbal medicine-making and in 2025 we will create a veteran-made label for their product brand. Sale of these items will support program expansion and vocational training and job opportunities for transition from military to civilian life. We will seek participation in the “Homegrown by Heroes” program for this product label.
To achieve this, we will expand our growing operations into the farm’s front field and undertake a significant renovation of the existing barn to create a new herbal medicine processing facility, commercial kitchen, and teaching space.
Dirt therapy is good medicine for the mind, body, and soul. We look forward to your partnership in our nature-based community model of wellness.
